SHS debaters sweep Quebec Tournament

Gryphon debaters swept the Quebec Provincial Debating Tournament last weekend, taking the top two places in the senior division, number one in the Junior division, plus Top Speaker honours.

The competition was held by Zoom on Feb. 12 and 13.

Sasha Klein-Charland and Matthew Homa (both Grade 11) emerged as the Senior Champions, beating out their Selwyn House teammates Dylan Lee and Daniel Bergevin (also both Grade 11), who came in second. Matthew Homa was named the Top Speaker in the tournament.

Charles Seitz and Yusuf Afif (both Grade 9) fought their way to the title of Junior Champions, making the tournament a sweep for Selwyn House.

Dylan, Daniel, Matthew, Sasha, Charles, and Yusuf will all be attending national debating tournaments as a result of their performance; and Dylan, Sasha, and Matthew will be trying out for Debate Team Canada.

“These results are impressive,” says SHS Senior Debating Coach Jonathan Bracewell. “Congratulations to all of our debaters.”
