Debaters excel in first tournaments

Selwyn House debaters placed second and third—and won a top provincial debater award—in their first tournaments of the season.

Selwyn House sent four teams of Senior School boys to the Quebec Student Debating Association tournament at Alexander von Humboldt German School in Baie-D'Urfé on October 1. The team of Mackenzie Blaise and Mitchell Vineberg, both in Grade 11, came in second, while the team of Grade 10 students Charles Seitz and Yusuf Afif placed third.

The QSDA tournament was the first in-person event SHS has competed in since February 2020.

On the same date, SHS Grade 10 student Adolfo De Motta Molina was named Best Quebec Delegate at the Canadian Student Debating Federation’s National Debating Seminar, a week-long virtual event that exposes students to debating in the context of a cultural exchange between young people from all regions of the country.

The prepared round for the debate was: “This House Believes that Canada has a responsibility to provide its First Nations, Metis and Inuit people with a standard of living equal to the Canadian average”.
