Grade 11 students have math for breakfast

On November 23, students in Grade 11 CST Math completed their unit on optimal configurations for surface area and volume by sharing a snack.

More specifically, the students learned that changing the dimensions and/or shape of a solid can leave its volume the same while changing its surface area. This affects the cost of packaging products since the cost comes from the plastic or cardboard that makes up the packaging.

“We calculated how to minimize the surface area used in packaging, and then we ate some cereal,” says teacher Dan Elbling.
