Our Grade 12 students have been actively researching academic programs, visiting campuses, and meeting with university representatives as they prepare their applications for institutions across Canada, the US and overseas. Students have met with representatives from 20 universities, including McGill, University of Toronto, University of British Columbia, Dalhousie, Huron, Syracuse, Colgate, University of Chicago, American University of Greece, and the University of Auckland. In addition, the Grade 12 cohort took a day trip to Queen's University to tour campus, attend sessions in Engineering and Business, test out the cafeteria food, and meet with athletics representatives. It was an excellent opportunity to experience a day in the life of a first-year university student. This trip inspired students to continue touring campuses to find their best-fit location.
Students participated in Open House events at many institutions, including McGill, Concordia, HEC Montréal, Western, and Guelph. Applications are being submitted, and offers of admission are already coming in. The first offer of admission with a scholarship was received on November 29!
Throughout the process, students participate in university admission workshops and meet individually with their College and University Advisor to discuss their academic program choices, prepare essays and references, and track applications.
In September, Ms. Peterman, Selwyn's College and University Advisor, attended the largest conference on college admission counselling in Baltimore, meeting with over 100 university representatives. She spent a day at Johns Hopkins University, and travelled down to Washington D.C. to visit Georgetown University, American University, Howard University, and George Washington University. The visits provide valuable insight into the differences and qualities of each institution and allow for an in-depth understanding of their different application requirements.
In addition, Selwyn partnered with nearby Quebec Independent Schools to host fairs for Canadian, American and International universities. At one session, Ms. Peterman presented with colleagues from Lower Canada College and Sacred Heart to U.S. institutions on Quebec High School Grade 12 programs, highlighting the unique aspects and opportunities that Selwyn Pre-U offers students and how we prepare each student to thrive at university.
