New Head of Hockey

Dear Selwyn House School Hockey Student-Athletes and Families,

Over the past four weeks, Selwyn House has undergone an extensive search for the incoming Head of Hockey. Throughout this process, the interview committee sought a candidate that embodies the virtues of Veritas on and off the ice and believes in a relational approach to overseeing all aspects of hockey operations.

In alignment with Selwyn House School’s overall mission and vision, our hockey staff aims to provide a valuable, safe, and positive hockey experience by educating, encouraging, and developing participants at all levels of the program, with a special emphasis on elite level offerings for Grade 7 to 12 players. We foster a culture of excellence whereby student-athletes will be successful leaders in sport, in the classroom, in the community, and in the world. The school strives to balance success in competition and academics while building pride and school spirit. The Head of Hockey is responsible for promoting and implementing this mission.

Broadly, the Head of Hockey will oversee pre-season and in-season player and coach development, player recruitment and retention, player evaluation, assessment and feedback, the team selection processes, game and practice scheduling, facilities and transportation coordination and management, and tournament planning and organization. Finally, the Head of Hockey is responsible for creating a culture within the hockey program that promotes excellence as well as Veritas.

It is with great pleasure that we announce the incoming Head of Hockey, Michael Baslyk. Michael will oversee the school’s hockey program and serve as Head Coach for the varsity team’s inaugural season in the Canadian Sport School Hockey League (CSSHL). As a former hockey player, Michael played university hockey at Concordia University, major junior for the CHL’s Bloomington Blaze, and professional hockey in Europe. Michael enjoyed leadership roles on his university and professional teams. His coaching experience includes time as a CSSHL and RSEQ U18 Head Coach, where he leveraged expertise as a player and analytics expert.

In addition to Michael’s extensive playing and coaching experience, he is also a former NHLPA Certified Agent involved in NHL scouting and recruiting. Michael also led several player development camps, including NHL pre-camp practices for Martin Havlat, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jonathan Huberdeau, Jonathan Drouin, and Michael Frolik. Lastly, Michael held the role of Hockey Operations Analyst for Concordia University, where he supported scouting, recruiting, and player development. Michael plans to support our players and families with his extensive network in the Juniors, USport, NCAA, and the NHL.

Michael holds a Masters in Business Administration and Sports Management, and brings valued experience in the field of marketing through his work for CCM and Reebok.

We warmly welcome Michael to the Selwyn House School community and are looking forward to this next exciting chapter for our hockey program.
