On Thursday, November 8, the Ottawa Chapter of the Selwyn House Old Boys’ Association held its annual reunion at the Metropolitan Brasserie. This year’s event was another great success and saw many Old Boys from different eras get together to celebrate with outgoing Headmaster Will Mitchell on his farewell tour. Mr. Mitchell proudly informed the Old Boys about the many successes of the current Selwyn House students. It is clearly evident that he is leaving the school in outstanding shape.

The event was a great opportunity for Old Boys and past staff to rehash their old Selwyn House days, while a photo slide show highlighted the recent architectural evolution of the Cote St. Antoine landmark.

The more venerable alumni were eager to learn whether Mr. Pat Shannon still subjects Senior School students to daily paroxysms of grandiloquent loquacity, or if the famous one-blade Bic used to remove illegal stubble had survived Mr. Wearing’s retirement. While many were meeting for the first time, it was extremely clear that a real bond exists among Old Boys. The Ottawa reunion, however small and monopolized by law students awaiting the articling job offer, was a marvel of a reunion that highlighted the connection Selwyn House Old Boys maintain.

Past staff members included Gail Gavan and Kate Angell, both of whom were fondly remembered by the Old Boys in attendance. A strong contingent of Old Boys who are now University of Ottawa students was present. Maurice Gibbs ’90, David McKinnon ’95, Asim Khan ’98, Josh Wisenthal ’99, Jason Tsoukas ’99, and Kyam Shell-Schnitzer 2001 continued the festivities even after the event ended. The word “Freeze!” was even overheard when it came to pick up the tab at the end of the evening.

Many thanks to Courtney Prieur and Paul Mayer ’74 for organizing the event. We look forward to having more Old Boys show up next year. Should you find yourself in the Ottawa area, please feel free to contact me at seanamckinnon@gmail.com and we’ll keep you posted on the next gathering.
