John and Karma Hallward honoured

Most people either see the big picture or they concentrate on details. John Hallward does both, says Selwyn House Headmaster Will Mitchell. Will should know; he and John steered the school through some of its most progressive years.

On September 19, Former Selwyn House Board Chair John Hallward, and his wife, Former Parent Volunteer Association President Karma Hallward, were honoured at a Board dinner for their years of service to the school.

After attending Selwyn House John graduated from Bishop’s College School and, later, Queen’s University.

John entered the world of marketing and worked for some of the biggest brands in the world, including Proctor & Gamble and Johnson & Johnson. At age 25 he founded his own market research company, which was so successful that he and his partner sold it to the French-based Ipsos ASI— the third-largest marketing research firm in the world—which promptly hired John back.

“John could not have been more generous with his time and his counsel,” said Mr. Mitchell. “I think that close collaboration helped us frame the issues and make better proposals and settle on better solutions than we would have otherwise.”

“The working partnership between the Chair and the Head of the school is absolutely crucial if schools such as Selwyn House are to thrive, and to meet successfully and as harmoniously as possible the challenges they all face,” Mr. Mitchell added.

John joined the Board of Directors in 1996. For a time, he was chairman of the Finance Committee. At another time, he “led one of the most important and successful strategic planning processes that the school has undertaken,” said Mr. Mitchell. “That…process helped launch us into the very significant facilities and endowment building programs that we have embarked on in the ensuing years.”

John continues to serve the school as a member of the administrative boards of the Veritas Fund and Lucas Fund.

“John, I am privileged to have worked with you, and the school is grateful for all that you have done for it,” said Mr. Mitchell.

John and Karma have a daughter and two sons, Derek and Evan, who both attended Selwyn House. Karma, as Mr. Mitchell said, “provided great leadership as President of the Parent Volunteer Association in some of the busiest times in the school’s history.”

The Hallwards are presently involved in establishing a philanthropic foundation called “Give Three” or “Donne Trois.
