Seitz named top Quebec speaker
“COVID restrictions haven’t slowed the debate team,” says Selwyn House Debating Coach Jonathan Bracewell.
The school just learned that Grade 9 debater Charles Seitz had been named top Quebec speaker at the Canadian National Debating Seminar, which took place October 1-4.
The seminar was held online by Zoom, and hosted by the Saskatchewan Elocution and Debate Association.
The Canadian Student Debating Association sponsors and helps to organize the event.
Because the theme of the seminar was Indigenous rights, Charles received a Talking Stick as a prize for his honour.
“This wasn't really a tournament that you win,” Mr. Bracewell explains. “The seminar is a non-competitive debating event, and the award is given for a combination of ability and outstanding participation.
“There were a variety of topics to debate, but the main motion for the tournament was:
This House regrets the failure of the federal government to effectively implement the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action.”
Yusuf Afif (Gr. 9) also represented Selwyn House at the seminar.
