Grade 7 Practice Run - Call of the Wild

Grade 7 students experienced a wilderness day-trip at Mont-Royal park as a means to prepare them for their expedition in a back-country setting. The Outdoor Program teachers, Mr. Deegan, Mr. McCarney and Mr. Pickrell, split the boys into three groups with an overall focus on autonomy, teamwork, and spatial awareness.

They covered basic survival skills like how to properly use a compact camping stove and how to tie different knots like the "Double Half-Hitch" and the "Trucker’s Hitch." The boys also learned proper knife safety and how to carve sticks. The students are ready for their one-night trip in mid-October where they will get to practice these new skills in the wild!
