The Annual Toboggan Lab!

For over 20 years, Mr. Downey's Grade 11 Physics classes have participated in the Annual Toboggan Lab! Last week, this year's grads had their turn. The goal: "to determine the coefficient of friction between their sled and the snow." Due to mild weather and freezing rain days before the lab, conditions were icy and fast! The students measured masses, lengths, times, angles and altitudes so that they might achieve the goal. Using their knowledge of forces, energy, kinematics and trigonometry, the students made calculations to confirm that "when it is icy, friction is very small!"
