Selwyn House Grade 6 student Pascal Voyer-Nguyen won first prize among all elementary students from Greater Montreal at the Expo-sciences Hydro-Québec, held March 24-26 at Collège Jean-Eudes.

Pascal’s project, entitled “Will Fall, Will Not Fall”, was an explanation of the workings of a gyroscope and the force of inertia that inhibits motion about its axis as it spins.

Pascal discovered a gyroscope on a family visit to a store, and became fascinated with it. With the help of his parents and his Selwyn House science teacher, Chantal Simard,
Pascal completed his prize-winning project.

Pascal expressed surprise at this win, but adds that anyone can win the competition if he has confidence.

M. Simard says that Pascal was initially reluctant to participate in the competition, but that once he agreed to take part, he became very determined to succeed.

“Pascal is one of the leaders in the robotics team at Selwyn House,” says M. Simard, “and he is preparing with his teammates for a robotics competition to be held in mid-April, in which they build and program a robot.”
