Cedars Cancer Centre Dragon Boat Race

Are you a student who is passionate about increasing cancer awareness? Are you eager to learn more and teach the Selwyn community about local cancer care services? There are many opportunities this September for you to be involved in making a difference in the lives of those touched by cancer.

On Saturday September 9, 2023, Selwyn House will be participating in the BDO Cedars CanSupport Dragon Boat Race. Since 2006, the Dragon Boat Race has raised $6 million for Cedars CanSupport, a vital program at the Cedars Cancer Centre in Montreal, providing free psychological, emotional, practical and financial support to cancer patients and their families over the past 30 years.

Are you interested in paddling in Team Selwyn’s dragon boat? Participation includes a one-hour team practice session and two to three races on September 9 at the Lachine Canoe Club. Race day includes games, speakers sharing their cancer stories, and a moment to honor hospital personnel, cancer survivors, and remember those we have lost in a flower ceremony. There is food available for purchase onsite, and picnics are welcome. Pets are also welcome. This event runs rain or shine. Participants under the age of 16 require a waiver and a parent or guardian must be present at the race.

No prior experience is required to participate. On September 9th, participants will arrive at the Lachine Canoe Club at 8 am. The event will finish around 2 pm. There is no fee to participate in this event. Donations to the Cedars Cancer Centre are welcome but not necessary to participate in the race.

As part of this experience, you will learn from people whose lives have been impacted by Cedars Cancer Centre and will work together to share your learning with the school community. As a team, you will tie your learning to the Terry Fox Run on September 15, where you will continue to promote cancer awareness within the school.

If you want to participate in this event but do not want to paddle in the boat race, there are other volunteering opportunities available with the Cedars Cancer Centre.

If you would like to participate in the Dragon Boat Race or contribute to this event in another way, please contact Ms. Schwartz by September 5th.
