Obituary - David Edward Ballon '77

David Edward Ballon '77

We are saddened to share the news of the passing of David Ballon on May 24, 2026, at the age of 65.
David attended Selwyn House School from 1970 to 1977, where he was a member of the squash team during the 1976-77 season. He was the brother of Reed Ballon '81, and the son of the late Edward Ballon '39, who served as Chairman of Selwyn House School from 1972 to 1976 and was the Spiers Medal recipient in 1988.
David will be remembered as a member of the Selwyn House community, and we are grateful for his family's many years of connection and service to the School.
Please see his obituary below.
We extend our deepest sympathies to David's family and friends.

David Ballon
July 18, 1960 - May 24, 2026

David Ballon passed away on May 24th, in his 65th year, from the complications of kidney disease. He is deeply mourned by his mother, Heather Ballon (née McPherson); and was predeceased by his father, Edward Ballon, in 2014. His four siblings, Daphne (Stephen), Andrea (Mark), Diana (Rick) and Reed (Julie), plus nieces and nephews, will miss him terribly for his intelligence, quirky humour and gentle nature. David especially loved his student days at Mount Alison University in New Brunswick and continued taking courses in the philosophy of religion at U of T. David's favourite place in the world was an island out of Honey Harbour in Georgian Bay, where he went every summer, gazing out at the water to where it disappeared on the horizon, walking up to the point to see the sunset, and writing children's stories. David had considerable health challenges which he managed with bravery and resolve. His donated kidney from his mother lasted well over 20 years. Many thanks to the wonderful doctors and nurses at St. Michael's Hospital, with special gratitude to his Nurse Practitioner Alison Thomas, Dr. Ron Wald, Dr. Kamel, Dr. Jeffrey Zaltzman, and Dr. Martin Schreiber. He was also indebted to Dr. Sharon Reiter at Sunnybrook Hospital and longtime pharmacist Pierre Massed. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Michael's Foundation for Kidney Care.
