Selwyn House Senior English teacher and debating coach Jonathan Bracewell recently received a national award for having made an “outstanding contribution to Canadian student debate.”
The award was presented in Cobourg, Ontario on October 14 at the closing banquet of the 50th Annual Canadian Student Debating Federation National Seminar, a conference held annually by the Canadian Student Debate Federation in conjugation with the Willis S. McLeese Foundation.
The Seminar, which involves both coaches and student debaters, includes not only competitions, but also workshops on debate techniques.
Honoured guest at the Seminar was Tom Lawson, who, at age 89, is considered the father of Canadian student debating.
Mr. Bracewell has been coaching debating at SHS for five years, during which time he has been working to “make our team nationally competitive,” he says. He also serves as President of the Quebec Student Debating Association.
Coming off a successful year, the Selwyn House senior debaters are heading into a busy one. Upcoming events include:
The 57th annual High School Championships, which will be held at McGill University on October 21 and October 22;
The Canadian Oxford Cup Qualifier, which is being hosted by Selwyn House School on November 24-26. This is a national-level tournament that will select two teams that will go on to compete at Oxford University in England in the spring of 2018.
