Obituary: John A. (Sandy) Boyd '42

John A. (Sandy) Boyd died after a brief battle with cancer in his 94th year. Husband and best friend to Gloria, his sparkling Hungarian wife of 67 years, father to his three devoted daughters, Nicky Cameron, Georgia Rennick (Craig) and Ginny Macdonald (Neil), and beloved grandfather to Boyd and Gillian Cameron, Rachel and David Rennick, and Elise and Brianna Macdonald. He was predeceased by his sister, Nancy, known as "Muff". Sandy was the 5th generation of his family to be born in Toronto and a direct descendant of Sir John Alexander Boyd Q.C.. He attended several schools in Ontario and Quebec: Rosedale Public School, Crescent School, Selwyn House, Bishop's College School and Ridley College, followed by Queen's University. Sandy had a distinguished career in the investment industry, primarily on Bay Street and with a brief period in London, England early in his career. His time in England was always important to him as this was where he met Gloria. He retired from the investment industry at the spry age of 80. His technical knowledge of investments, sound judgement and an unparalleled ability to build trusted relationships were at the heart of a successful career. Throughout his life, Sandy was an active, contributing member of many communities: he was President of what was formerly known as the Toronto Financial Analysts Society, a Trustee of the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts, a member of the Editorial Board of the CFA Digest, and he was a proud holder of charter number 700 of the CFA. Sandy was also actively engaged in communities outside of work, including President of the Sans Souci Association, on the Board of the Georgian Bay Land Trust and an active member of the Osler Bluff Ski Club, the Toronto Club, the Ticker Club, the Badminton & Racquet Club, Sans Souci Association and Portincross. He was deeply respected by all who had the opportunity to work with him. Sandy had an innate curiosity that spanned business, nature, astronomy, geography, history and more. A lifelong, avid learner, his home on Inglewood Drive was filled with books on every topic. He was a gifted athlete and a passionate skier until the age of 88, when he reluctantly put away his skis. On days when the weather was fierce with freezing rain, his ski class, the over 80s, was often the only group at Osler on the hill, happy that they had the place to themselves. He was a nautical master who looked for any excuse to traverse the Georgian Bay, usually in search of an ice cream cone. More than anything, Sandy was devoted to his family. Never once did he put his own needs ahead of any member of his family. He and Gloria actively created a welcoming, beautiful home in Toronto to bring the family together for holidays and birthdays, in the Georgian Bay to bring daughters, spouses and grandchildren together every summer and in Collingwood for skiing in the winter. Sandy leaves an indelible legacy for his family and all those fortunate to know him. Our appreciation to Belmont House and the wonderful staff. A celebration of life will be held in the Fall.
