Selwyn Debaters Shine Across Three Consecutive November Tournaments

Over the course of three consecutive weekends in November, the Selwyn House Debating Team showcased its talent, resilience, and competitive spirit across multiple major tournaments.
On November 7–8, seven Selwyn teams travelled to Ottawa to compete in the uOttawa English Debating Society’s annual tournament. Two of our teams: Joseph B. & Ken G., and Max A. & William L., advanced all the way to the final round. While the win eluded us, their performance demonstrated the strength and determination of our program. Special recognition goes to Jacques H., who impressively debated the entire tournament solo after his partner fell ill, and to Laila Bracewell, who stepped in at the last minute to partner with a Selwyn debater.

The following weekend, November 14–16, four Selwyn teams represented Quebec at the Canadian British Parliamentary National Championships, held at Western Canada High School in Calgary. The level of competition was exceptionally high, and although none of our teams advanced to the elimination rounds, our debaters gained invaluable experience on the national stage. Congratulations to William L. for being named the Top Quebec Speaker, and sincere thanks to coach Emma Jones for supporting the team throughout the trip.

Finally, on November 23, seven Selwyn teams competed at a CEGEP and high school tournament hosted by Dawson College. Joseph B. and Jacob B. reached the semifinals as individual debaters, and a special congratulations goes to Joseph for winning the entire tournament.

Across all three events, our debaters demonstrated commitment, perseverance, and growth. We are incredibly proud of their accomplishments and excited for what lies ahead. - Mr. Bracewell and Mr. Elbling
