Ian D. Macaulay
July 22, 1971 - February 9, 2025

Ian Macaulay, who passed away on February 9, 2025, in Phuket, Thailand was born in Montreal, Canada, to Ann Welbourn Macaulay and Ian Hamish Macaulay.

Ian's life was shaped by an insatiable curiosity and a love of learning. He earned his undergraduate degree in East Asian Studies from McGill University and studied as an exchange student at Sophia University in Tokyo. He later pursued a master's degree in international relations at Columbia University.

Ian's adventurous spirit, sharp intellect, and infectious sense of fun made him a beloved friend. He built a wide and devoted circle of friends and colleagues who valued his thoughtfulness, humor, and generosity.
An entrepreneur at heart, Ian founded Elite Havens, a company instrumental in developing the luxury villa rental market in Bali. His dedication to quality and service set new industry standards and left a lasting impact.

A gifted linguist, Ian spoke fluent Mandarin and had a strong command of Japanese, Indonesian Bahasa, Thai, and French. His ability to connect across cultures enriched both his personal and professional relationships, deepening his ties to the places he called home.

Predeceased by his father, Ian is survived by his mother, his sister Fiona Macaulay and her family. He will be profoundly missed by his extended family in the UK, friends around the world, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Ian was cremated in Thailand, and we will hold a memorial service for him in July.
