Selwyn House debaters Jarren Fefer and Nabeel Ahmed won the Aristotle Cup at Marianopolis College last Sunday, April 30.
“It is significant that their biggest challenge was having to debate against their own teammates, Felix St. Onge-Tavchandjian and Gabriel Di Bert,” says SHS Debating Coach Jonathan Bracewell.
“Particular recognition goes to Dylan Lee in Grade 7,” Mr. Bracewell adds. “Dylan came in eighth place overall, beating out veteran debaters and Grade 12 students.”
“Over the last few weeks, the debating team has been competing at some very high-level tournaments,” Mr. Bracewell reports.
Jarren Fefer, Nabeel Ahmed, and Felix St. Onge -Tavchandjian tried out to represent Canada at the World Schools Debating Tournament, the most prestigious high-school-level tournament in the world. The SHS team is awaiting the results of those tryouts.
Three teams also recently went to the Canadian Debating Championships, where Jarren Fefer was named Best Quebec Speaker.
As well, Joshua Cohen and Gabriel Di Bert recently went to the International College of Young Debaters Championship in Cambridge, England.
“It was an intense competition, and we await the results,” says Mr. Bracewell.
