Selwyn House Grade 10 student Samuel Charette played in Carnegie Hall in New York City last June, as part of the 2017 High School Honors Performance Series.
He performed as a percussionist with the Honors Band Orchestra. Participation in one of the three Honors Ensembles is limited to the highest-rated high school performers from across North America and select schools internationally.
Sam auditioned last fall for the Honors Performance Series and was accepted after a review by the Honors Selection Board. Acceptance to this elite group is a direct result of the talent, dedication, and achievements demonstrated in his application and audition recording. Samuel joined performers from 43 American States, several provinces of Canada, Australia, and Taiwan.
According to Nancy Richardson, Program Director, “Being selected to the Honors Performance Series is something each finalist should be extremely proud of accomplishing. We process thousands of nominations annually, selecting only the most talented performers. Working with these conductors and performing at
Carnegie Hall is a once-in- a-lifetime experience that these student musicians never forget.”
Sam has studied music for 10 years and is a member of The Jazz Elitez Band and Senior School Band. In response to his selection as a finalist, Sam said, “It was the most thrilling, nerve-wracking and exciting experience of my life. Definitely the most honorable and memorable one yet!”
Finalists came together for five days in June 2017 in New York City to have the opportunity to learn from Dr. Kennneth Ozzello and work with other finalists, and get a taste of New York City. The Sunday, June 25, performance was open to the public.
The Honors Performance Series was created to showcase accomplished individual high school performers on an international level by allowing them to study under master conductors and perform in the most celebrated and coveted musical venue, Carnegie Hall. The Honors Performance Series is presented by WorldStrides, the nation’s leading educational travel organization.
