On May 31, the AP Calculus class welcomed Dr. Tim Chartier to their classroom via Zoom. Dr. Chartier is the Joseph R. Morton Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at Davidson College and the current Distinguished Visiting Professor for the Public Dissemination of Mathematics at the National Museum of Mathematics.
Dr. Chartier oversees a group of close to 100 students at Davidson College who collect and analyze data from the school's women's and men's varsity programs. His work with these students has earned him national recognition and he has become a regular consultant for the NBA, MLS, NASCAR and the NFL.
The boys enjoyed learning the 'behind the scenes' of sports analytics, specifically how to collect data and ask meaningful questions in order to provide coachable insights for the teams.
What a fantastic opportunity for the students to see their love of sports and math(!) come together so beautifully. – Ms. Sayegh, Senior School Math Teacher
