Elementary School Celebrates Selwyn's 117th Anniversary with Founder's Day Assembly

On November 27, Elementary School students gathered in Coristine Hall to celebrate Selwyn House’s 117th birthday. The assembly began with O Canada, with piano accompaniment from Grade 6 student Shawn X., before Headmaster Mike Downey welcomed everyone and reflected on this year’s theme of Family, a value that has shaped our community since the school’s founding in 1908.

Students were taken on a journey through the school’s history, from its beginnings as the Lucas School to the thriving Selwyn House of today. A fun surprise came when “the oldest Old Boy," played by Mr. Kennedy, wandered in to reminisce about his time at the school and the lasting feeling of family that continues to define it.

The assembly also featured a heartfelt video talking abou the legacy of Ms. Nancy Pitfield, and parent volunteerism she helped inspire. Following the video, this year’s Nancy Pitfield Parent Volunteer Award was proudly announced to be Danping Shi in recognition of her meaningful contributions to the Selwyn House community.

Crescent S., Gabriel S., Austin Z., Logan S., and Elias K. then shared their own reflections on what family means to them, both at home and at school, before Headmaster Downey introduced this year’s Speirs Medalist, Old Boy, and dedicated community member Mike Avedesian ’88.

The celebration closed with the singing of the school hymn, a reminder that kindness, connection, and community remain at the heart of Selwyn House.
