Obituary: DeWolf Shaw '66, '67

We are saddened to inform you of the passing of Gerald DeWolf Shaw, Class of '66 and '67.

DeWolf passed away in the ICU of the Montreal General on September 27 after sustaining a fall at home three weeks prior. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him including his life partner, Lloyd Palmer, his three adult children Ted Shaw, Jennifer (Parnell) Houweling, Eric (Alexis) Shaw and his six grandchildren Ryan, Zoe, Ava, Reagan, Rowan and Xavier.

DeWolf attended Selwyn House from 1956 to 1967. He was a proud alumnus and regular attendee at the Montreal reunions. In the 1967 yearbook, DeWolf penned an essay entitled "On Friendship". The essay begins with: "One of the most important rewards of life is to be happy and to make friends, for a person without friends, and consequently without anyone to turn to in hard times, will be unhappy." DeWolf never passed up the opportunity to catch up with his many lifelong friends from his years at the school.

DeWolf considered himself a graduate of both 1966 and 1967, as he stayed n school to redo Grade 11. His classmate and friend Michael Martin says: "Entirely typical of DeWolf to claim being in two grad years not just one. I’d tell him he liked SHS so much he decided to stick around for an extra year."

During his years at Selwyn House, DeWolf was a member of Wanstall House, a Cub Scout, a member of the Choir, a Prefect, a member of the Debating Club, a public speaking contest finalist, Chairman of the public-speaking contest, took German lessons and, in his final year, was Assistant Head Prefect. He also took figure skating lessons. His motto from the 1966 yearbook: "You can't be a failure without your own consent."

DeWolf's daughter Jennifer wrote: "Just know my father LOVED Selwyn House and every opportunity and relationship that came from his time there."

No service will be held, as per his wishes.
