A Selwyn connection to 2022 Nobel Prize for Chemistry

Jeremy Baskin '98 has just returned from the formal Nobel Prize celebrations in Stockholm, Sweden as a guest of his Ph.D. advisor. Professor Carolyn Bertozzi won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for chemical reactions called “click chemistry and bioorthogonal chemistry”, which are based on research that he played a significant role in performing during his Ph.D. studies at the University of California, Berkeley back in 2004-2009. Images from one of his publications, in the journal Proc Natl Acad Sci, were featured prominently in the Nobel Prize announcement. The events included the Nobel lectures, award ceremony, and white tie banquet. "It was, in short, an honor and the experience of a lifetime.

Jeremy is pleased to showcase a Selwyn connection to the world's most prestigious scientific prize and more broadly shine light on the impactful things that can be achieved with a career in chemistry and/or scientific research. Needless to say, that one of Jeremy's former Chemistry teachers, Headmaster Mike Downey, is extremely proud.

Jeremy is Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry & Chemical Biology at Cornell University where he and his team are centred on "pioneering innovative chemical approaches to probe the biology of lipids and membranes, with a focus on developing new molecular imaging tools and elucidating biological mechanisms relevant to human disease."
