Seeing old things in new ways

In Grade 9 Photography class, students are encouraged to pay attention to what is right under their noses and see it in a new light. The class went for a photo walk on a beautiful sunny January day to take architecture photos at Westmount Square, an emblematic modernist architectural building located near the school. In the previous class, students learned about Mies van der Rohe architecture and his use of strong lines and shapes. Students learned about architectural theory before visiting the site which allowed them to make a connection between the breakthrough architectural style and photography composition, noticing how strong lines and shapes apply to both. –M.
